How it all began…
In 1869, Dr. Thomas Bramwell
Welch, a physician and dentist
by profession, successfully
pasteurised Concord grape juice
to produce an "unfermented
sacramental wine" as an alternative
to altar
wine for fellow parishioners at his church in Vineland,
N.J., where he was a communion steward.
In utilising Louis Pasteur’s
famous theory to pasteurise his juice,
Dr Welch
unknowingly opened the gateway for all fruit juice
processing. Today, fruit juice processors around
the world continue to use the same principles that
Dr. Welch applied
in his small New Jersey kitchen.
Grape juice gained huge popularity
in the USA and in 1893 was sampled by thousands
at the Chicago World Fair. Dr Charles E.Welch,
the son of Welch's founder, discontinued his
practice of dentistry to give full attention to
the marketing of grape juice.
A new label is adopted,
omitting the "Dr." before the name Welch's.
The company went from strength
to strength with the introduction
of a variety
of new and innovative fruit-based products under
the Welch's brand name in the USA. The Welch's
company continued to grow in the years that followed
and in 1952
was sold to
The National Grape Co operative and
growth continued unabated.
Welch's is now the world’s
leading producer of the famous
100% purple Concord
grape and white grape products.
Since 1869, Welch's 100%
Grape Juice has cultivated a reputation for quality,
wholesomeness and value. This reputation has
helped make Welch's one of the most recognisable
and respected consumer brand names in the United
States and throughout the world for high-quality
fruit-based food and beverage products you can
trust.
